The Rise and Fall of Innocence

Such innocence breathes behind your eyes
Singing such a beautiful melody
Fervent upon escaping to the void
Growing heartily as does the child
Sneaking impending throughout your youth
Skillfully, dutifully plotting for precise release

Only to dissipate upon long awaited release
Never to be seen again by living eyes
Now left reminiscing on your youth
Wishing to remember that long forgotten melody
From when your heart belonged to a child
Seeking out anything to fill that aching void

But there is little that can fill such a void
Much is lost on purity’s release
Not yet a man and no longer a child
A new animal awakes abaft blue eyes
Respiring new tones, a discordant melody
Jarring the foundation laid in your youth

It’s a fight to the end between death and youth
Death prevails, all else retreats to the void
A single note resounds from the final melody
Holding out for the conductor’s release
Time expires, a final gasp escapes your eyes
What’s left of you is your only child

Some small piece becomes your child
A miraculous essence revives your youth
Life brought forth to new eyes
Eyes that you created from the void
A new monster plots its release
Cantillating its sweet misleading melody

All enveloping seductive melody
Takes up root in the heart of the child
Death’s grip will not release
To live we risk our youth
Teetering on the fall before the void
Leaning in we close our eyes

As a child we sing such a delicate melody
Then taste a bittersweet release from our youth
Then falling, the void meets the eyes

Hearts in Atlantis

On days like today
We learn to smile between the hours of disarray
It’s only in the moment we know how to feel
And it’s all we can do not to break
When the sun refuses to rise
And we fight so hard to numb the pain
The silence tells what our mouths couldn’t say
That our body is only just a shell
A dying allusion to a former self
So it seems like we should mourn
And that our hearts must truly ache
But they’ve all but died and paled away

So it’s nights like tonight
When the chest falls as the sun goes down
And fails to rise with the moon
And we feel like it would have been better to never see the stars
Because they make us feel so damn small
That our voice lands just outside of hearing
Like we couldn’t stop the world from turning
And there’s nothing left to break our fall
It’s a sinking feeling like a broken soul
Biding its time all the way down
Underneath the darkest night
A drowning vessel never to be saved

Remember when we used to sit
 Underneath the daytime sky
Telling stories of simpler times
To the clouds passing by
Or how we used to dream of New York City nights
And Atlantis just within our sights
Or friend, have you just forgotten
That we said it would never end

‘Cause I think you did, Yeah I think it did.
