West of the Shore, Into the Storm

I set sail just the other day
Sunlight on the sea
That lapped so gently on the shore
Like the hands of a lover
Who has never loved before

The water whispered in my ear
So innocent
So unaware
Of the violence and destruction
It held within its breast

So on I floated day by day
Further into the deeply loving arms
Of an infinite and unmappable body
Which softly sang its blues

It was the siren song of the tempest
Building
So. Slowly.
One scarce could recognize
I found myself directly in her eye

“I can weather the worst”
I thought
“Because I’ve seen you at your best”
It’s only a matter of time
Before this storm is in the past

But when the warrior winds fell silent
The storm had bested me
I am as cold and dark and blue

As nighttime on the sea
